Since the Bronze Ages, Greeks established colonies all over the Mediterranean and the Black Seas and later far deep in Asia.

Hundreds of cities like Empuries in Spain, Marseille and Nice in France, Syracuse, Napoli, Regio, Taranto in Italy, Cyrene in Libya, Cherson in Ukraine, Rostov in Russia, Durres and Vlorre in Albania,, Sukhumi in Georgia, Split and Hvar in Croatia,  Costanta in Romania, Varna and Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Ephesus, Izmir, Istanbul, Gallipoli and many others in Turkey.

Following Alexander’s conquests, new hellenic cities have been founded like Antioch in Syria, Alexandria in Egypt, Seleucia in Iraq and even Kandahar in Afghanistan, creating a unified Hellenistic Civilization.

After Roman conquests and the division of the Empire, the East Roman (aka Byzantine) Empire was predominantly hellenized and christianized, occupying Balkans, Anatolia, Levante, as well as parts of Italy, Crimea and Egypt.

However, multiple conquests by Arabs, Normans, Franks, Venetians, Genoveses, Catalans, Slavs, Turks, Tatars, etc ended the ever-growing greek cultural expansion, inserting though new elements.

Athens, as the center of the modern greek world, has been inclusive to all cultural features, new and old, that we can easily spot in food, architecture and lifestyle.
